Danish Architecture and Society: Three Excursions in the Copenhagen Area
By Associate Professor, PhD Nan Dahlkild, KU
In three excursions, we will dive into the development of Danish Architecture in and around Copenhagen with examples dating from the 1750’s to the 20th century. The first excursion will be Frederiksstaden with Amalienborg Castle and the Rococo Style of Nicolai Eigtved. The equestrian statue is the focal point of the right-angled urban planning of this royal part of Copenhagen. The second one will take us to Garden City Copenhagen in the area around Grøndalsvænge with gardens, green areas, and romantic curved streets from the first decades of the 20th century. Lastly, we will visit Klampenborg and enjoy the white beach architecture of Arne Jacobsen. The area is a fine example of Scandinavian Modernism and the visions of modern life in the 20th century.
Please notice:
- The first time we meet and end at Metro Kongens Nytorv
- The second time we meet and end at Fuglebakken S-Station
- The third time we meet and end at Klampenborg S-Station
The three excursions will be based on the book Danish Architecture and Society. From Absolute Monarchy to the Welfare State. Ed. by Nan Dahlkild and Lind, Olaf & Annemarie Lund. Copenhagen Architecture Guide 2020.
